Curriculum
Reading:As readers we finished learning about what it means to read fluently. Students learned that to read fluently, you should read using the punctuation, read with expression, read accurately and read at a good rate (not too fast or too slow). Next week, we will begin a new unit learning about characters and character traits. We will start reading books and noticing how the characters feel. We will then talk about what the characters say or do and what they tells us about them as a person.
Book Baggies:
Please help the students remember to bring their book baggies every Friday. I would like them to have an opportunity to read different books.
Writing:
This week as writers, we did a lot of practice writing How To books. Next week, we begin a new unit writing opinion writing. We will begin by reading mentor texts and noticing what published authors do in their writing.
Math:
In math this week, we focused on place value. Students are learning to identify the tens and the ones. They are learning to draw base-10 blocks and then identify the value of the digit in the tens place and the value of the digit in the ones place. Next week, we will continue some of this learning.
IXL Skills - Use these activities as you wish to help your child with the skills we will be working on throughout this first trimester.
Science/Social Studies:
This week, the students had an opportunity to make paper cup phones as a way to communicate over a distance. They are continuing to learn that sound travels in waves through different types of matter. Plus, they are learning that sounds are made by vibrations. Next week, we will compile our learning in our science notebooks.
Purposeful Play
Please see the Purposeful Play tab on the blog to learn more about our weekly Play Time and donation items we could use for it!

- adding and subtracting to 20 - play a board game for this
- telling time (What are the hands on the clock? How is a clock set up?)
