Curriculum

Reading:
In reading, we've been reviewing our Daily 5 expectations and practicing so that we can become better, more focused readers.  In addition, we've been reviewing the 7 Habits of Happy Kids.  We have talked about Habits 1-5 this week.  Next week, we will review the rest of the habits.  We will also continue to learn strategies that good readers use when they are stuck on words and strategies that help us better understand our reading.

Book Baggies:
Please help the students remember to bring their book baggies every Friday.  I would like them to have an opportunity to read different books.

Writing:
As writers, we began a class How To book.  We also did some other different types of writing this week.  Next week, we will continue to write How To books to help students learn the informational format of writing.

Math:
This week we learned how to add 10 to a number.  The students are starting to see how adding a ten changes the number.  This will help them build their place value knowledge and will help them later when adding harder numbers.  We have also been working on adding 3 addends and measuring items when units are already laid out for the students next to the item.  Next week, we will focus on subtracting 10 from numbers.

IXL Skills - Use these activities as you wish to help your child with the skills we will be working on throughout this first trimester.

Science/Social Studies:
This week we learned more about sound.  Students were able to listen to different sounds to try to identify them.  They also saw a tuning fork and were excited to explore with them to see how to make different sounds and change the volume of them.  Next week, we will continue to explore with the tuning forks as well as other experiments that help the students to learn about sound, vibrations, volume and pitch.

Purposeful Play
Please see the Purposeful Play tab on the blog to learn more about our weekly Play Time and donation items we could use for it!

Homework
  • Read every night (you can read with your child, listen to them read or read to them - all of it helps).  Then talk about the book - who are the characters, what happened, why did it happen, make connections, what's the main idea, why did the author write the book, how did the author give you information, what features did the author use to help you as a reader
  • Work on a math skill
    • counting forwards and backwards within 120 (and skip counting)
    • adding and subtracting to 20 - play a board game for this
    • telling time (What are the hands on the clock? How is a clock set up?)
    • identify and count coins
    • measuring - length and volume -  have your child cook with you to practice this
    • talk about shapes - 2D and 3D - find items around your house, etc.)
