Curriculum

Reading:
This week, we learned another station for our Reading Learning Shop.  Students learned and practiced the Work on Writing station.  We also continued to practice Reading to Someone and Reading to Self.  Plus, students had an opportunity to book shop.  They were able to pick books at their level to help them grow as readers during our Reading Learning Shop.  Next week, we will learn about the last two stations of our Daily 5.  Students will learn about the Learning Words and Listen to Reading Stations.

Book Baggies:
On Monday, your child should have come home with a bag of 6 books.  We will be changing these books out every Friday from now on (starting October 7th).  Students should have three different levels of books.  This is done purposefully to help your child be successful but also push them to grow as readers.  Please help the students keep their books organized by always keeping them in their baggie.  Next week Friday, when students change out their books, we will also include a reading log in the bag, so that students can keep track of their reading at home.

Writing:
In writing, we have been working on our concept books.  Students have been planning, drafting, editing and rewriting their concept books.  Next week, we will begin a new concept book so that students can continue to practice their writing skills.

Math:
In math we learned about different math tools and how to use them.  We focused a lot on using a number line to count.  Students had an opportunity to play a game called Bunny Hop (which they loved)!  We also worked on comparing numbers by playing Top-It (it's very similar to the card game of War).  I am hoping to finish up Unit 1 next week by reviewing how to make tally marks, comparing numbers and learning to count on a number grid.  I would like to give the Unit 1 Assessment on Friday of next week (October 7th). Below are the skills that students should be working on in this unit.

Unit 1 Skills
o I can count carefully
o I can write how many objects
o I can tell which number is larger
o I can use a number line to count
o I can solve number stories

Unit 1 Study Guide - You may use this to guide you in helping your child study for this Unit 1 Assessment.

Unit 1 IXL Skills - If you would like to, students may use IXL to help them practice these skills.

Science/Social Studies:
We wrapped up our Unit on citizenship this week.  Next week, we will focus on team building in our classroom community.  We want all students to learn to work together, communicate, and solve problems together, so we will take this time to work on some of those skills.

We are asking families to help cover the cost of many items needed to make each celebration a success.  Your cash donation of $7.00 per child (no checks please) will be used for many things, some of which are listed below:
