Curriculum

Reading:
This week, we learned another station for our Reading Learning Shop.  Students learned and practiced the Work on Writing station.  We also continued to practice Reading to Someone and Reading to Self.  Plus, students had an opportunity to book shop.  They were able to pick books at their level to help them grow as readers during our Reading Learning Shop.  Next week, we will learn about the last two stations of our Daily 5.  Students will learn about the Learning Words and Listen to Reading Stations.

Book Baggies:
On Monday, your child should have come home with a bag of 6 books.  We will be changing these books out every Friday from now on (starting October 7th).  Students should have three different levels of books.  This is done purposefully to help your child be successful but also push them to grow as readers.  Please help the students keep their books organized by always keeping them in their baggie.  Next week Friday, when students change out their books, we will also include a reading log in the bag, so that students can keep track of their reading at home.

Writing:
In writing, we have been working on our concept books.  Students have been planning, drafting, editing and rewriting their concept books.  Next week, we will begin a new concept book so that students can continue to practice their writing skills.

Math:
In math we learned about different math tools and how to use them.  We focused a lot on using a number line to count.  Students had an opportunity to play a game called Bunny Hop (which they loved)!  We also worked on comparing numbers by playing Top-It (it's very similar to the card game of War).  I am hoping to finish up Unit 1 next week by reviewing how to make tally marks, comparing numbers and learning to count on a number grid.  I would like to give the Unit 1 Assessment on Friday of next week (October 7th). Below are the skills that students should be working on in this unit.

Unit 1 Skills
o I can count carefully
o I can write how many objects
o I can tell which number is larger
o I can use a number line to count
o I can solve number stories

Unit 1 Study Guide - You may use this to guide you in helping your child study for this Unit 1 Assessment.

Unit 1 IXL Skills - If you would like to, students may use IXL to help them practice these skills.

Science/Social Studies:
We wrapped up our Unit on citizenship this week.  Next week, we will focus on team building in our classroom community.  We want all students to learn to work together, communicate, and solve problems together, so we will take this time to work on some of those skills.

Here is a link to the October Play Based Homework!  You will be receiving a copy of it when your child comes home today!

Holiday Party Information

The 1st and 2nd grade teachers are starting to organize our yearly celebrations.  During the year, we have several celebrations.  In October we have our Halloween party, in December our Holiday Party and in February a special Valentine snack.  In addition, we have some fun activities planned for the last week of school in June.

We are asking families to help cover the cost of many items needed to make each celebration a success.  Your cash donation of $7.00 per child (no checks please) will be used for many things, some of which are listed below:

I can't believe it's already been three weeks!  Time is flying by!  The students are really starting to understand the procedures and routines of our classroom.

Curriculum

Reading:
This week, we continued to practice reading to self and building our stamina when we read to self.  We have made it to 8 minutes!  In addition, we learned about reading to someone.  Students practiced reading with different partners and learned several different ways to read with someone.  Next week, we will learn about Working on Writing during our reading learning shop.

Writing:
In writing, we have been discussing concept books.  Students learned that concept books are picture books that teach us about a broad concept or topic.  We explored several concept books that taught us about topics such as shapes, counting by 2s, opposites, ABCs, etc.  Next week, students will take what they've learned from these mentor texts and begin planning and writing their own concept book.

Math:
This week, we we continued to practice Math Writing and Math by Myself.  Next week, we will begin Unit 1 from our Everyday Math Program.  We will not complete every lesson because many of the skills students have already been learning through our Math Writing and Math by Myself tasks.  Below are the skills that students should be working on in this unit.

Unit 1 Skills
o I can count carefully
o I can write how many objects
o I can tell which number is larger
o I can use a number line to count

Today I sent home student password papers.  We quickly reviewed each of the sites.  Please do not have students access SeeSaw at this point.  We have not discussed it enough yet.  I will send home a letter to explain how to log in at a later date.  However, students are welcome to use any of the other sites at this time (Everyday Math Online, IXL and Raz-Kids).

We Made It Through the First Week!!

Friday, September 9, 2016 No comments
Parents,

Thank you for a great first week!  I have enjoyed getting to know the students and learning about what they like/dislike, their families, and how they like to learn.   This week, we spent a lot of time, learning about each other and learning about our classroom.  We discussed ways to help ourselves learn best at the carpet, how to stay safe at recess, how to be leaders of our learning, and how to work with others.

Next week, we will continue to learn about one another, but we will also begin some of our reading and math.

Reading: We will introduce how to Read to Self.  Students will learn what they should do during Read to Self time and what the teacher will be doing during that time.  In addition, we will learn how to find "Just Right" books, when to go "book shopping", and where to sit when Reading to Self.

Math: Our focus next week will be on learning how to write about our math.  Students will learn to look for important parts of word problems and then explain their thinking on how to solve the problem.  We will also learn about our Math by Myself station.  Students will learn to be leaders of their learning in math.  They will learn to try their best and work through the math independently.

Science/Social Studies: In order to prepare students for our science and social studies PBL (Project Based Learning) units, we will learn about Digital Citizenship.  Students will learn how to use the Internet, iPads, and Chromebooks safely.  They will learn to be responsible with technology.
