Welcome families to our class blog.  You will find updates on curriculum, important dates and other information here at our blog.  Please check here weekly for these updates.

Curriculum

Reading:
We spent a lot of time getting to know each other this week.  Students listened to several read alouds that were focused on appropriate behavior, how to treat others and growth mindset (learn more about this at the Learning Tab on our blog.) Next week, we will read stories with strong characters to begin discussing and learning about character traits.

Book Baggies:
In the next week or two, we will begin sending home book baggies.  Students will have 6 books in their bag (two below their reading level to help them work on fluency, two at their level to focus on good reading skills, and two above level to continue to push and grow as readers).  These bags will stay at home all week for students to practice reading.  We will exchange books each week, so it is important that they remember to bring their bag back to school on Fridays when we exchange our books.  If a student forgets or is absent one week, they will need to return them the following Friday.  I will need some volunteers to help us prepare our book library and to help with the exchanging on Fridays.  If you are interested, please let me know!

Math:
Next week, we will begin our first math unit.  Below are the skills that we will be exploring.

Unit 1 Skills
o I can add and subtract within 10 to solve number stories.
o I can count to 20 starting at any number.
o I can read, write, and draw numbers up to 20.
o I can answer questions about data in a chart.

Unit 1 Study Guide - You may use this to guide you in helping your child study for this Unit 1 Assessment.

Unit 1 IXL Skills - If you would like to, students may use IXL to help them practice these skills.

Social Studies
We will be working on a couple Social Studies units over the next couple weeks.  This week, we have been working on our Communities unit.  Our focus has been on our classroom community and how we can make it fun and safe.  We will continue this as well as start learning about different types of families.  If you haven't already, please send in a family photo (no larger than 5X7) so that we can discuss our families!  These photos will be returned to you at the end of the year.

Purposeful Play
Please see the Purposeful Play tab on the blog to learn more about our weekly Play Time and donation items we could use for it!

Seesaw:
This week, we learned a lot about our online resource called Seesaw.  Some students may have used it a bit last year, but we will try to use it more this year.  It is a type of a journal for the students.  We will be posting different things we learn about for you to see at home.  If you have not already signed up for it, please do!  Your student will have a great time showing you the different things they post to share with you!
