Curriculum

Reading/Writing/Science:
The students worked really hard this week to wrap up their learning about chicks, life cycles and genetics.  It was so nice of so many of you to come and join us to help them celebrate all of their hard work!  Thank you!

Math:
This week, we focused on learning about place value.  Students had to identify the tens and ones places as well as tell the value/worth of the digit in the tens or ones place value.  We used base 10 blocks to help us with understanding place value and the difference between 10s and 1s. Next week, we will continue to review place value and also use place value to help us add within 100.

IXL Skills - Use these activities as you wish to help your child with the skills we will be working on throughout this third trimester.

Purposeful Play
Please see the Purposeful Play tab on the blog to learn more about our weekly Play Time and donation items we could use for it!

Homework
  • Read every night (you can read with your child, listen to them read or read to them - all of it helps).  Then talk about the book - who are the characters, what happened, why did it happen, make connections, what's the main idea, why did the author write the book, how did the author give you information, what features did the author use to help you as a reader
  • Work on a math skill
    • counting forwards and backwards within 120 (and skip counting)
    • adding and subtracting to 20 - play a board game for this
    • telling time (What are the hands on the clock? How is a clock set up?)
    • identify and count coins
    • measuring - length and volume -  have your child cook with you to practice this
    • talk about shapes - 2D and 3D - find items around your house, etc.)

Curriculum

Reading/Writing/Science:
This week, the students have been learning about the life cycle of a chicken.  They  took their learning and wrote about it.  In addition to the life cycle, we have tried to discuss genetics and how they impact young in both chicks, other animals and people.  Next week, the students will work on putting all of their chick learning together into a book/presentation.  You are welcome to come to hear more about their chick learning on our Chick Celebration next week Friday at 2:30pm.

Book Baggies:
Please help the students remember to bring their book baggies every Friday.  I would like them to have an opportunity to read different books.

Math:
In math this week, students reviewed how to collect data and create bar graphs, pie charts, and tally charts using the data.  In addition, we worked on telling time to the half hour.  Next week, we will continue to practice telling time to the half hour but also review place value.

IXL Skills - Use these activities as you wish to help your child with the skills we will be working on throughout this third trimester.

Celebration of Learning

Thank you for attending the Celebration of Learning! It is really special for the kids to have an opportunity to share their learning and pride in their learning with you!  We really appreciate you!

Curriculum

Reading/Writing/Science:
It was hatching week!  Monday, the students came in with great questions about what we were going to do when the chicks arrive/hatch!  Therefore, we did some reading and writing about what we need to take care of chicks.  They are becoming more and more independent readers and writers.

Book Baggies:
Please help the students remember to bring their book baggies every Friday.  I would like them to have an opportunity to read different books.

Math:
In math this week, students had an opportunity to write their own math problems and then solve them, we reviewed data and analyzing data, and we also began learning a bit about coins and their value.  Next week, we will focus on telling time to the half hour.

IXL Skills - Use these activities as you wish to help your child with the skills we will be working on throughout this third trimester.

Family Fun Night

Thank you for your support.  Just a reminder that Family Fun Night will be held on Friday, May 3rd.

Curriculum

Reading/Writing/Science:
As readers, we've been reading about a chick egg.  We've learned about its parts and how they help the embryo to develop and grow.  We then used that learning to help us write another non-fiction writing.  Next week, we will learn about hatching.

FIELD TRIP: Please remember we have our field trip on Monday, May 6th.  Students need to dress appropriately for the weather.  They need close toed shoes.  Students also need to bring their own lunches as we will be eating at the farm.

Book Baggies:
Please help the students remember to bring their book baggies every Friday.  I would like them to have an opportunity to read different books.

Math:
We learned to compose different shapes using smaller 2D shapes.  Next week, we will learn to partition shapes into halves and fourths.
