Curriculum

Reading:
This week, we've been reading a lot of biographies.  The students are really enjoying them!  As we read, we're identifying the character traits of each person and giving evidence to support that claim.  Next week, we will continue to read more biographies and identifying character traits.  We will also discuss the past through these books.  We are learning to compare and contrast the past and present.

Book Baggies:
Please help the students remember to bring their book baggies every Friday.  I would like them to have an opportunity to read different books.

Writing:
As writers, we've continued to write opinion writing.  The students were given a checklist to help them keep on track in their writing and to make sure they include all of the necessary parts (ie. lead, middles with transitions, ending, close spelling, punctuation).

Math:
In math, we've been learning to add 3 addends.  Students are practicing explaining their strategies as they add.  Next week, we will begin learning to add two-digit and one-digit numbers.  It is important that they continue to build their addition and subtraction fluency and place value knowledge in order to make this skill easier.

IXL Skills - Use these activities as you wish to help your child with the skills we will be working on throughout this first trimester.

Science/Social Studies:
We learned that shadows are formed when light is blocked.  We also discussed how shadows can change sizes and locations.  Next week, we will wrap up our unit on sound and light by learning about mirrors, reflections and our eyes.

100s Day

DATE CHANGE: Thursday, February 21st!

Math:
In math we've been learning to tell time to the hour.  Students will continue to practice this skill, but please also practice at home.  Next week, we will review adding 3 addends and strategies for adding.

Friday, February 1, 2019 No comments
I hope you all enjoyed the extra family time this week.  Much of what we had planned for this week, will now be moving to next week.  Have a great weekend!

Curriculum

Reading:
As readers, we will continue to read books and explore characters next week.  We are hoping to be able to identify different character traits based on what the character says or does in our stories.  Eventually, we're hoping to look for patterns in characters across different books.

Book Baggies:
Please help the students remember to bring their book baggies every Friday.  I would like them to have an opportunity to read different books.

Writing:
As writers, we will begin our opinion writing unit next week.  Students will begin by reading opinion type stories and noticing what this type of writing has.

Math:
In math we will continue our place value learning next week.  Students are learning how pennies and dimes are like tens and ones.

IXL Skills - Use these activities as you wish to help your child with the skills we will be working on throughout this first trimester.

Science/Social Studies:
Due to a very short week, we will have to wrap up our learning on sound next week.  Students are testing their knowledge by taking a quiz.
